Postoperative Instructions for Eyelid Surgery
General Overview
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) aims to enhance the appearance and function of the upper or lower eyelids. Following these instructions is crucial for optimal healing and to minimize complications.
Activity Guidelines
1. Sleeping Position:
• Sleep with two pillows or in a recliner for the first 48–72 hours to reduce swelling.
• Avoid lying flat during this period.
2. Avoid Bending Down:
• It is extremely important to avoid bending your head down at all times. This can increase pressure and cause complications.
3. Avoid Straining:
• Refrain from activities that raise your blood pressure, including heavy lifting, bending over, or any form of straining.
Dry Eye and Corneal Abrasion Warning
1. Notify Us Immediately:
• If you have a history of dry eyes and did not disclose it, please inform our office as soon as possible.
• If you experience a sandy or scratchy feeling in your eyes, let us know immediately, as this may be a sign of corneal abrasion.
2. Medications for Dry Eye or Irritation:
• Antibiotic ointments such as Erythromycin or Bacitracin may be prescribed to apply 1–2 times daily to the upper eyelid incisions and, occasionally, the lower eyelids.
Diet and Hydration
1. Hydration:
• Drink water slowly to stay hydrated and prevent nausea.
2. Diet:
• Stick to a soft, easy-to-chew diet to avoid unnecessary strain.
Medications
1. Antibiotics:
• Keflex 500 mg: Take every 6 hours for one week (if no allergies).
• Clindamycin 300 mg: Take every 8 hours for 7–14 days if allergic to penicillin.
2. Antibiotic Ointments:
• Use Erythromycin or Bacitracin as prescribed for the upper eyelid incisions, and for lower eyelids only if signs of infection or corneal abrasion appear.
3. Pain Relief:
• Use over-the-counter Tylenol (do not exceed 2000 mg in 24 hours).
Incision Care
1. Keep Incisions Dry:
• Do not get the incisions wet for at least one week.
2. Makeup:
• Avoid wearing any makeup on the treated areas until explicitly advised.
3. Contact Lenses:
• Avoid using contact lenses for at least one week, and possibly longer if healing requires it.
• Have a pair of glasses available for use during this time.
Hygiene and Showering
1. Showering:
• Use antibacterial soap during showers. Avoid letting water or soap run over the incisions.
• Dry the treated area with sterile pads—do not use towels.
Activity Restrictions
1. Physical Activity:
• Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for 6 weeks.
2. Smoking:
• Refrain from smoking for 2 months before and 1 month after surgery to prevent complications and delayed healing.
Scar Management
1. Silicone Scar Treatment:
• Begin using silicone scar tape or gel (e.g., Silagen) once the incisions are fully healed and scabs are gone.
2. Advanced Scar Treatments:
• Consider options like microneedling or laser therapy for scar improvement after 6–12 months.

• Sudden swelling or increased pain on one side of the face.
